Will You Need a Crown?
Teeth can become damaged – worn down or broken beyond the point where a routine filling will be able to reconstruct the tooth. At this point, a crown is the restorative solution. A crown will not only save the tooth, but in many cases it will make the tooth stronger than before the damage occurred. We use the highest quality materials available for making our crowns, and the end result is so natural, you won't be able to tell it isn't a real tooth.

Natural-Looking Crowns Made While You Wait
In the past, having a tooth repaired with a crown only occurred in stages. First, there was the initial appointment for the temporary and casting impressions. Then there was a delay while an out of town lab made the permanent crown. Then a second, follow-up appointment took place for your dentist to place the crown. If it didn't fit correctly, then the entire process started all over again.
What a difference modern technology makes! Instead of a two-week timeframe, in just a couple of hours your new, permanent crown will be ready. With CEREC™ computer-aided design and milling, the fit will be perfect, the crown will be durable, and the beautiful appearance will simulate the look of a natural tooth. Our patients love this new technique for fitting and placing crowns.
The process is simple. With a special camera, a detailed image is captured and displayed on our computer screen. We then design the restoration and CEREC creates the crown. Next, we insert and bond the restoration to your tooth. Like our other patients, you will be delighted with how easy this is!

A crown is a tooth-shaped cover placed over a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed. Many people call it a cap.
Crowns may be placed for several reasons. Usually the tooth has been broken or severely damaged by decay. As a result, a filling can't replace enough of the tooth or make the tooth strong enough. A crown may hold together parts of a cracked tooth. It also can be used to hold a bridge in place. Crowns can be used to improve appearance as well. They may be placed to cover misshapen or badly discolored teeth.
Crowns can be made ahead of time (prefabricated) or made to order in a laboratory. Prefabricated crowns are made of plastic or stainless steel. They can be used on a temporary basis until a permanent crown is made.
Crowns can be made of:
- All metal
- Zirconia
- Porcelain fused to metal (PFM)
- Porcelain fused to zirconia
- All ceramic
Metals include gold alloy, other alloys (palladium) or a base-metal alloy (nickel or chromium). The all-metal or PFM crowns are stronger and are better choices for back teeth than ceramic crowns. PFM and all-ceramic crowns are the same color as your natural teeth. They look just like normal teeth.
