Use toothpaste with fluoride for infants and children
For children younger than 3 years, you should begin brushing a child’s teeth with fluoride toothpaste in an amount no larger than a grain of rice. For children 3 to 6 years of age, use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Consider sealants to prevent decay or treat beginning cavities on the back teeth
Dental sealants act as a barrier to prevent cavities. They are a plastic material applied by a dentist to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay occurs most often. To read the entire article visit MouthHealthy.org.

Choosing
Your Child’s Dentist is Like Choosing
Their Pediatrician
Children’s teeth are more susceptible to cavities than
adults. They often do not brush properly, and they eat
more often throughout the day. As a result, acids,
bacteria, and plaque will build up. If teeth are already
not as clean as they need to be, additional exposure to
acids from eating (acid is formed in the mouth when
eating) will speed up the rate of cavity development.
We encourage parents to oversee their children’s daily
dental care until they can clean their teeth properly by
themselves. We advise them how to make better
nutritional choices to help care for their teeth and
recommend an application of a fluoride varnish to
mineralize their teeth to significantly reduce cavities.
Preventing Child Tooth
Decay – the Easy Way!
Even the most meticulous brushing does not reach all the
areas and contours of teeth. As bacteria and plaque
build up, decay will occur. Even a small amount of decay
will need a restoration with a filling, and for larger
amounts of decay, a crown.
There is a technique that can help to reduce the
development of cavities – an application of dental
sealant. This treatment is easy and quick.
The teeth are first cleaned and sterilized. A thin
coating of the sealant is brushed on the surface of each
tooth. This is clear and invisible. A curing light is
applied to bond the sealant to the teeth. The complete
procedure takes only minutes but can help to preserve
children’s and adolescent’s natural teeth for a
lifetime. It is painless, as no shots or drilling are
necessary.
